The Guggenmusik

The Guggenmusik

"L'Os Clodos" - Carnival of Monthey 2005
"Au pas de la boille" - Carnival of Monthey 2006
Most guggenmusiks are conducted by a music director, who sets the running speed and gives the tempo , directing how a conductor.
Groups guggemusik are bands that make music with costumes. They are mainly Swiss, but there are some groups in neighboring countries.

The guggenmusiks (can also be written guggen, guggemusik, guggamusig, guggemusig, etc...) according to the German Swiss cantons) are musical groups composed mostly of brass instruments (trumpets, trombones, euphonium, sousaphone) and percussion (mobile batteries , bass drums, granits), and sometimes, lyres. Some add saxophones, percussion accessories, or other, some do not euphonium, or not souza, but the whole is more registred.

According to Claude Fieni, the word Guggenmusik comes from "Gugger", paper bag in the shape of some wind instruments. We were already at the beginning of last century in the cities of Lucerne and Basel. These coteries met great success in the fifties and sixties, and formed new Guggen heim in Western Switzerland and Ticino. Beyond the borders of Switzerland, are found in Liechtenstein, Germany, Austria, France and even England.

Style and repertoire

Their goal is to play during carnival, usually quite strong, with expressive sounds, well stamped. Although sometimes accused of being anti-musical, some models are guggenmusiks musicality and arrangement. The repertoire consists of covers of varieties of traditional and modern tunes.

The best play guggenmusiks about this: the trumpets divided into two or three games with a lot of treble, paper clips also divided into two or three parts and rhythmic story filling the harmony. The euphonium play counter melody or add harmonics, they can also have vocal parts to create sets of shades. The souzas give harmony in general and their part often resembles a bass part of variety. The bass drums are playing rhythms fixed on one or two steps and stand out from the group. The batteries are part of improved variety with many additions often placed in equilibrium, which reduce the rhythm section. The granits bring a touch of latin if necessary.

More and more guggen compose their own music or at least arrange for their sauce. As "star of the snow," ABBA, "Stand By Me", "Margaret", all the great classics of Western Switzerland guggen directories.

In Swiss German large formations do not have well defined whole of pieces.

Everything is based on games between parts, we sometimes find a trumpet or trombone solo during a song, but it is not very common.

The guggenmusiks mainly Swiss and occur mainly in their country or in neighboring countries (France, Belgium, Germany ...). Increasingly, the guggenmusiks participate in major overseas events such as the Olympic Games in Turin in 2006, Martinique's Carnival or Carnival of Quebec.

The arrangement

In music, the arrangement is ancillary to the musical composition, as only informs a given topic by using a more extensive instrumentation - orchestration - or upgrading an original piece in a elsewhere.

An arranger is the name of the person that specializes in creating arrangements. In most cases, a composer "classic" is also his own arranger. Nowadays, composers create varieties of melody, but rarely have the technical skills demanded by arrangement. However, with the development of home studio, they can sketch out some ideas using synthesizers and color guide to giving a piece. But the final arrangement, very technical, will be entrusted to the arranger.

Harmonics of a sound

A sound wave is characterized physically by its frequency of vibration and it is measured in Hertz (number of vibrations per second). For example, the "A3" has a frequency of 440 Hz higher the frequency, the higher the sound is high. At heights (and thus frequencies) identical sounds emitted by two different instruments (eg violin and flute) do not resonate in the same way. Each is characterized by its so-called stamp that identifies it, that no translation of his nature is really simple: it follows from the combination of its primary or basic, which sets the frequency perceived by the ear and a large number of harmonics whose relative weights determine precisely its timbre.

The harmony

In its broadest sense, the word harmony means traditionally one of the four elements of music - the others being the rhythm, the melody and timbre.
Harmony is the deliberate use of frequencies simultaneously, with a view to provide relief and depth to the song or instrumental performance : she represents the aspect vertical music, while the melody is the aspect horizontal.

In a music system, the word melody means the dimension that takes into account the heights emitted by a source, individual or collective, instrumental or vocal in a musical production of any kind. The main melody is opposed to the rhythm, another component of the music.
Because it is a succession of sounds with different frequencies, a melody is a succession of intervals. Indeed, from the standpoint of the interpreter, like that of the listener, each note of a melody is determined by the melodic interval that separates it from the previous note.

The rythm

The rhythm is in music, which determines the duration of notes to each other. The rhythm, melody, tempo and nuance are the four main facts to characterize a given musical phrase.
