The Bandas
The bandas are located in the south-west of France and Spain, and elsewhere in the world, eg Brazil. In the south of France and Spain, many cities have their own group bandas.
The magnificence of the costumes and clothes, and brass, reminiscent of the old traditional festivals, where we found ourselves in the warmth of the group and where everyone could share his joy, rallying under the banner of the festivities.
Today
Today bandas offer an extensive repertoire that enables them to produce world music, as far as the chorus of celebration that animate the night until morning. First, there are musicians, all applied to lead and to dance, but also to touch the audience with their music. These are mostly in love with the festival "white" and are heavily inspired by "san fermines" in Pamplona. The bandas that are found in the festivals of south-west is from this culture Navarre and perpetuate this tradition colorful bullfights, street fairs and peñas.
Music
This music comes straight from the "calle jarauta de iruña. The "pasa calle" are mainly of hymns of Pamplona peñas. The repertoire is completed by "jotas", pasodobles and pieces of South America. The music variety is not much played by such training, or it is diverted from more humorous.
Lexicon
The term banda comes perhaps from Spanish, but its roots seem to come from the languages of invading the High Middle Ages. Its meaning will change little over the centuries. This will be the banner and the troops. The bandas have left the current warlike aspect and kept the spirit of the group and complicity.
Events
- During the festival of bandas, that is bandas which are the centers of interest. These festivals are usually organized around competition that separate the musical qualities of their activities on a podium, pasa-calle, cafes and bistros, with their musical qualities, etc... The appearance of clothing, banners and more are also part of the image that leaves the banda, and is not neglected, especially since the banda is a musical feast. The "Festival de Bandas Y Penas" of Condom awards since 1973, the coveted "Palme d'Or. This award recognizes both the performance of the banda musical talents of its animation.
- The pasa-calle (street-pass) : it is a parade of the band from street to street for entertainment in the city in celebration. These parades are not formal and they keep the strict military bands for the organization and the constraints of the orchestra, they are shameless, and their goal is to have fun, laugh and multiply with the complicity public. The winks are amusing or satirical legion.
- The ferias are festivals in Spanish, but by extension, it uses this term to describe kinds of celebrations of Spanish origin (bullfights), but also affecting the traditions that put cows to bulls or entertainment center (running Landes is typically French and without any harm to animals). During these festivals, street bands are still present.
